Luis Valbuena, Jose Castillo die in car crash in Venezuela

Disgusting news to pass along as former Cubs infielder Luis Valbuena and former major leaguer Jose Castillo were killed in a auto accident Friday morning in Venezuela.

Former infielders killed in crash while leaving game in Venezuela. The chauffeur and infielder Carlos Rivero, a teammate of Valbuena and Castillo who was also in the vehicle, survived.

Venezuelan newspapers El Emergente and Meridiano reported on the accident, with the Houston Chronicle's sportswriter Chandler Rome, confirming the news.

The crash reportedly happened when Valbuena and Castillo left the University Stadium at Caracas after playing a game in a Venezuelan Professional Baseball League.

Valbuena, 33, and Castillo, 37, had finished playing a game for the Cardenales de Lara in the Dominican Winter League. Major League Baseball also confirmed the news in a statement on social media. "We lost our players Luis Valbuena and Jose Castillo in a traffic accident". "Our thoughts and prayers are with their loved ones during this time of grief".

He joined the Angels prior to the 2017 campaign, ultimatly being released by Los Angeles in August.

Valbuena played 11 seasons in the majors with multiple teams that included the Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros and the Angels.
