NY reports sharp rise in flu cases

The Florida Department of Health said there have been 8 new outbreaks, making it a total of 37 so far across the state this flu season.

Last year's flu season, keep in mind, was particularly severe.

Flu season officially began in October, and can last into May.

Cuomo announced that over the past week, cases of influenza in New York State rose by 72 percent, and new cases of influenza were reported in 58 out of 62 counties. They are Wyoming, Yates and Seneca counties, and Hamilton County in the Adirondacks.

In addition, the number of patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza was 363, a 41 percent increase from last week. Westchester is one of the counties with the highest increase in the number of flu cases.

Health officials urged people to get vaccinated for the flu. The CDC reported six pediatric deaths, 4,310 infectionsand 18 weeks of widespread outbreaks.

So far this year, there have already been seven pediatric deaths attributed to the flu.

"Influenza can be deadly, especially for the elderly and people with chronic medical conditions", said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. As of December 22, nine states are experiencing high flu activity, while seven states and Puerto Rico are experiencing moderate flu activity.

Health officials said most people are testing positive for Influenza A H1N1.
