Microsoft's red-headed step-child Vista doesn't register anymore - it fell below 1 percent market share at the start of 2017, the month of its 10-year anniversary. Microsoft also announced it will be rolling out updates to Windows 10 in the future instead of launching new software iterations.

But now that Windows 10 is practically the most popular OS in the world, with macOS (as a whole) being used by 9.61% of users and Linux claiming 2.09%, Microsoft's dominance in the desktop world will continue to make the company relevant in the consumer world.

According to Net MarketShare Windows 10's share rose to 39.22% in December, while Windows 7's fell down to 36.90%. Microsoft already confirmed a year ago that its Windows 10 OS version has been installed on 700 million devices including PCs, Xbox, tablets and phones.

In December Windows 10 finally overtook Windows 7 as the go-to Microsoft OS, where the two had previously been level-pegging over October and November. Windows 7 64-bit is said to have dropped 3.53 percent, with other OS's adjusting upwards and downwards slightly. According to New Marketshare, in November past year Windows 7 held 38.89 percent of the market while Windows 10 was second with 38.14 percent. Below that you're looking at Windows XP as the next most prevalent version, though that only has 4.54% of the market share. Windows 7 reached 100 million users in less than six months of its launch. That's not an easy job, for sure, but considering Windows 10 is now the most popular version of Windows, the complete shift will happen eventually.

Windows 7's extended support is set to end on January 14th, 2020. This time it is broken FLAC support in Windows 10.
