Microsoft Announces Unlimited Private Repos for GitHub Free

Microsoft has made its first changes to GitHub since snapping up the open source code repository in June, offering more on its free tier while consolidating its enterprise offerings. That said, one weakness of the platform is that it limits who can create private repositories - that is, software projects that aren't visible to the broader public, and are shared only with a handful of pre-defined collaborators - to paying users. The Next Web, which mistakenly broke an embargo over the weekend, revealed that Microsoft will now allow users of free GitHub accounts to create private repositories, something that was restricted to developer and team accounts until now (via ZDNet). If you are an independent developer who has a ton of side projects and similar things, you can create private repositories for free without having to pay anything with the change.

Today's announcement is a win for those students. Using GitHub Connect, they can be securely linked to work across both environments. Sound off in the comments if you think making private repositories free with some restrictions can help GitHub grow its user base this year. And truth is, most of the independent projects on GitHub are mostly personal projects that are either not fully developed or left behind by the developer. GitHub previously had separate prices and products depending on whether enterprise customers were using the cloud-hosted service or the on-premises version.
