It rapidly spread on social media as it showed about 17 white children sitting around a large table, with four black children around a small corner table in the background.

"The kids were quite unsettled, you must realise they were five years old on their first day at school, and she grouped them in a way she thought would settle them quickly and comfort them", he said.

A teacher from another school in the town told News24 that racism would never end in the area, especially among white people. Children play separately according to race. "We hope that the school staff is ready and willing to address this issue immediately and to make a commitment to change outdated attitudes toward integration".

The teacher also complained about the school's language policy. "Now they want to make this as if its racism, everyone just wants to make white people racists, we are not racists, we just want what was best for our children", the parent said.

Concerned resident Lebogang Motlhabane claimed that black children were often denied access to the school and were placed on waiting lists when they applied for enrolment. Whilst my office is 20mins away I sped to collect my child at an instance and remove her from the school immediately.

"All I saw was messages from the white parents saying "dankie, dankie" ['thank you, thank you' on the WhatsApp group] but no one was saying anything about the separation of the learners", the mother said. White people will always see black people as inferior to them. "They think we are still living in the era of apartheid which our fathers and mothers died fighting against", said Motlhabane.

Spokesperson for the NFP Sabelo Sigudu said: 'These private schools tendencies of segregating learners based on the colour of skin is against the principles of the democratic South Africa we live in today'.

Some white parents have removed their children from the school because they fear for their safety.

Governing body chairperson Jozeph du Plessis released a statement after a chaotic day at the school, which saw a protest by members of the community, including some EFF members, and a visit by provincial government officials.

In the other pictures, children of different races can be seen interacting.
