3 dead, 23 hurt in Ottawa double-decker bus crash

Authorities responded to the scene and discovered the vehicle "had run into the bus platform at Westboro station", which resulted in numerous injuries on the bus and platform, according to police.

On Friday, it became the site of a fatal crash by a double-decker OC Transpo bus, which hit a shelter as it was travelling the 269 route on its way to Bridlewood, which is located in the suburb of Kanata, and just under 20 kilometres away from the station. Of those transported, 14 were in critical condition and 11 were in serious condition, paramedic chief Myles Cassidy said at a news conference.

A passenger who had been on the upper deck of the bus told CBC News that people at the front were pinned under their seats. Buses are being detoured from the area so that police officers can conduct an investigation.

Two of the victims were passengers on the bus. "There's an accident up ahead and it's a bad one, so we're going to be waiting here for a while". Two of the three people killed in the crash were on the bus, while the other was standing on the platform at the time of the collision.

A Transportation Safety Board investigation into the Barrhaven incident concluded in 2015 that the driver of the bus was likely distracted by a video screen that he was required to monitor on the job.

OC Transpo general manager John Manconi told reporters the bus could have been holding as many as 90 passengers and that the agency would be co-operating fully with the investigation. It called for the addition of bumpers to double-decker buses, but found that double-decker buses were otherwise safe.
