FBI probed whether Trump was Russian agent

No evidence has been revealed publicly asserting that Trump had secret contact with or was influenced by Russian government officials, and spokespeople for both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and special counsel's office refused to comment.

Investigators have examined key episodes such as Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey and his fury over the recusal from the investigation of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

An American presidential campaign chairman handing over of internal polling data to a corporate associate of a foreign power is unusual, at best.

According to the Times report, the inquiry was ultimately handed over to Robert Mueller.

President Trump said he was unaware of Mr. Whitaker's past statements about Mr. Mueller's probe and that he would "not get involved" if Mr. Whitaker moved to curtail it.

On May 11, 2017, Trump told NBC, "when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said, 'you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story".

"The question is, was this in return for a promise of something from the Russians, and did the candidate, now the president, know about it?" he asked, before adding that it "would be "a conspiracy" even if the Trump campaign never received anything of value from the Russians. An FBI spokeswoman and a spokesman for the special counsel's office both declined to comment. It is unclear what happened to the probe after that. And there is no evidence yet public that Manafort ever told Trump that he was talking with Kilimnik, much less sharing poll numbers and discussing Ukraine and Russian Federation.

The investigation has not concluded and the public has not been notified of the final results.

One aspect of that investigation - whether Trump's firing of Comey represented obstruction of justice - has been previously reported.

The lawyer, Michael Cohen, has been sentenced to three years in prison for multiple crimes, including felony violations of campaign finance laws he undertook, prosecutors alleged, under Trump's direction.

The hearing marks the latest step in Cohen's transformation from a trusted legal adviser to the president to a public antagonist who has cooperated extensively against him.

The newspaper said it's not clear whether Mueller is still looking into that matter.
