Paris explosion: Blast rocks street in heart of French capital

Firefighters are tackling a blaze in Paris following a powerful explosion.

Several people were injured after a big explosion badly damaged a bakery in central Paris, smashing windows in surrounding buildings, reported AFP.

In the immediate aftermath, smashed cars and debris from other shop fronts littered the street in front of the burning bakery as people stood around, looking stunned by the force of the explosion.

"Blocks away this looks like a major, major explosion that just happened". Debris from a burned auto and broken glass littered the pavement.

Authorities were on high alert in the French capital for a ninth consecutive Saturday of "yellow vest" protests, with large parts of the city centre blocked off by riot police.

According to the BFMTV broadcaster, a bakery caught fire after the blast.

Firefighters pulled injured victims out of windows and evacuated residents as smoke billowed out of the building on Rue de Trevise in the 9th arrondissement of north-central Paris.
