To clarify, the woman can only hear voices belonging to other women.

A Chinese woman's rare health condition has reportedly rendered her unable to hear the voices of males - including her own boyfriend.

In what nearly sounds like an excuse not to listen to her boyfriend, a woman in China has been diagnosed with a rare condition that makes her unable to hear the sound of men's voices, but can hear women just fine. Before she went to bed one evening, she experienced nausea and a ringing in her ears.

Dr Lin diagnosed her with a condition known as "low-frequency hearing loss", after Chen said she had been working late recently, putting her body under stress and not getting enough sleep. This explains why hearing loss more often affects our ability to hear higher-pitched sounds than lower-pitched ones, she said. "The graph starts in the lower-left-hand corner and slopes upward steeply", Audiology Hears writes.

Reverse-slope hearing loss (RSHL) gets its name from the shape it produces in visualizations of hearing tests - a slope that is a mirror image of the incline produced by high-frequency hearing loss, according to audiology clinic Audiology HEARS, P.C.

Trump says massive visa overhaul could lead to U.S. citizenship

Luckily, Chen could make a full recovery, and should be able to hear her boyfriend's voice once again.

Although there are a number of causes of reverse-slope hearing losses, the most common causes are genetic abnormalities, Wolfram syndrome and Mondini dysplasia.

Those with the condition typically have trouble hearing low-frequency sounds. This can put sufferers in danger, as they may not hear noises like oncoming cars.

The extremely unusual condition, which reportedly affects only about 3,000 people in the US and Canada, causes patients to lose their ability to hear low-frequency sounds, including average male voices. This can be caused by general anesthetic, a perilymphatic fistula (an abnormal opening in the ear), and intracranial hypertension, caused by pressure in the central nervous system.
