The crash - which took place at around 8pm on Thursday (3pm local time) - happened in a south-eastern city of Guantánamo, around 1,000 miles away from the capital Havana.

The dead ranged in age from 32 to 67, according to a tweet by Radio Guantánamo, which identified the injured USA citizen as Allison Alida Kemmer. Out of the 33, five are in critical condition.

The driver of the bus told Radio Guantanamo that he lost control on the wet and winding road.

The road is said to be one of the most risky in Cuba, where roads are poorly maintained and accidents are frequent, correspondents say.

In Cuba in 2018, there were 750 deaths and 7,999 injuries in 11,187 accidents in the country of 11 million.
