A winter storm that dumped heavy snow on the U.S. Midwest, causing at least five roadway deaths, stranding some motorists in Missouri and canceling dozens of flights, marched east toward Washington on Saturday. Hundreds of people were stranded for hours as snow and freezing rain rendered parts of Interstate 44 in Missouri almost impassable on Friday evening.

Yet more snow is forecast, and the Weather Channel is predicting that St Louis could see one of it's heaviest 2 two-day snowfall events on record.

The weather service issued a winter storm warning for areas of central and southern IL including Springfield, Champaign and Carbondale.

Up to 18 inches (45 cm) of snow were expected in the Sangre de Cristo mountains south of Denver, according to the National Weather Service.

"This storm may become an overachiever when it comes to snow and ice". Philadelphia is predicted to get 1 to 2 inches of snow, and there is a possibility of light accumulation in NY along the storm's northern edge. "The models this morning are 2 degrees colder than (Thursday), which will lead to higher amounts of snow and ice than were forecast (then)", CNN meteorologist Chad Myers says.

About eight inches of snow had fallen there by early afternoon.

The Southeast has seen abundant precipitation in December and January, and the additional rain could put a strain on rivers already high.
