Mayor de Blasio calls on City Council to pass paid-vacation proposal

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio vowed Wednesday to make the city the first in the country to require employers to offer paid vacation days.

Universal healthcare has become a rallying cry for liberal Democrats and an article of faith for numerous new representatives in Congress. Officials claimed that New York's scheme would be the most comprehensive free healthcare system in America.

Al Jazeera's Kristen Saloomey reports from NY. However, about 600,000 New Yorkers remain without insurance because they do not or cannot enroll, according to City Hall.

Traffic fatalities also dropped to a record low in 2018, with the lowest deaths reported since 1910, the mayor said, and NY permanently housed more than 2,000 homeless residents.

"Health care is a right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it".

"Here in United States, we have fewer days off than anywhere else in the world - time that increases productivity and improves mental and physical health", said Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner Lorelei Salas. But the services won't be free for everyone, the paper reported: Fees will be assessed on a sliding scale, depending on income.

Conservative organizations and groups that represent employers said the paid vacation mandate proposed in NY would hurt the city's economy.

The city will be expanding NYC Ferry service from Coney Island to Lower Manhattan (2021) and will be adding a new stop at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in 2019. Councilman Williams introduced a similar measure in 2014, but all prior attempts to pass paid personal time legislation have been unsuccessful. "Today we celebrate our city's relentless commitment to accessible, high-quality health care".

The mayor plans to pursue legislation that would require private employers with five or more employees to provide employees with up to 10 days of paid time off per year.

Mayor Bill de Blasio delivered his annual State of the City address Thursday in Manhattan.

Both stories being leaked first to national press, as opposed to local papers, had local journalists grumbling about - if not outright offended by - yet another display of the mayor's disdain for local NYC media, revealed explicitly previous year in a series of emails released on court order.

The city will also pressure the MTA to restart the SBS Bus program, helping fulfill the de Blasio administration October 2017 commitment to add 20 SBS routes citywide.
