Earlier, the Syrian media reported that Israeli jets fired multiple missiles at Damascus on Friday night, adding that most of the missiles had been shot down before reaching their targets.

The attack which took place at 11:15 p.m.(2115 GMT), was the second in less than three weeks.

Meanwhile, the state TV said the Syrian air defenses destroyed eight Israeli missiles over Damascus, and cited airport officials as saying the airport was functioning as usual without changes of flights. Explosions were heard in one of the videos.

The strikes are suspected to have been carried out by Israel and targeted the area surrounding Damascus airport and Al Kisweh region where Iran has heavily deployed proxies and military sites in the past, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

While the Syrian government repeatedly accuses the Jewish state of constantly violating its sovereignty and aiding the terrorists by their raids in the country's airspace, Eisenkot claimed the Israeli actions are justified - and that, anyway, neither Damascus nor Tehran can do anything about it.

He also reportedly noted that the prime target of Israel was Iran, who has repeatedly insisted that its presence in Syria is limited to military advisors assisting Syrian forces in their fight against terrorism.

It was the first airstrike on the Damascus area this year since Israeli warplanes struck areas near the capital at the end of December.

Many of them have been in the area south of Damascus.

Israel has not responded to the allegations it was involved in that incident, but previous Israeli air strikes inside Syrian territory have drawn criticism and recently caused tensions with Russian Federation, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
