Cargo plane crash in Iran leaves 15 dead

Up to 15 are feared dead after a cargo plane "landed at the wrong airport" amid severe weather in Iran and crashed into a residential building before exploding.

But a source told Fars agency that the plane belonged to the Iranian military's air force.

The Boeing 707, which was carrying meat from Kyrgyzstan, skidded off a runway after an emergency landing in the town of Safadasht, near the Iranian capital of Tehran.

Images carried by Iran's state-run media showed the burned-out tail of the plane sticking out, surrounded by charred homes.

A spokesman for Iran's civil aviation told state TV earlier that the plane - which was reportedly carrying meat - belongs to Kyrgyzstan.

Pirhossein Koulivand, the head of the country's emergency medical services, said of the 16 people on board the plane, only the flight engineer was known to have survived. Some reports on Iranian media said 10 people were on board and that they were killed.

The plane is believed to have taken off from Bishkek Manas International Airport in Kyrgyzstan before making an emergency landing.

Saha Airlines' Boeing 707s suffered a previous fatal crash in April 2005, when a flight coming from the Kish island crash-landed at Mehrabad Airport in Tehran, killing three passengers.
