Last year, Ocasio-Cortez was also mocked after lamenting the shuttering of a coffee shop in NY, even though it closed its doors thanks to the wage hike in the state - a policy that she supports. The former vice-presidential nominee, who retired in 2013 after being a US Senator for 24 years, insisted that the Democrats will only be losing public support if they adopt, what he called, her "left-left" views as their own.

"She needs to decide: Does she want to be an effective legislator or just continue being a Twitter star?" one House Democrat who agrees with Ocasio Cortez's ideology told Politico.

But he's the president - she's a new member of Congress who shot out of a cannon following the midterm elections.

"There's a difference between being an activist and a lawmaker in Congress", the source said.

Ocasio-Cortez is one of several newly-elected Democrats who hopes to bring a radical leftist streak to the somewhat moderate Democratic establishment.

They both unseated a fellow Democrat and share Puerto Rican roots.

House Democrats were also annoyed that Ocasio-Cortez sought a seat on the powerful Ways and Means Committee - on which veteran lawmakers typically serve - with a grassroots campaign to pressure Speaker Nancy Pelosi to add her to the panel, Politico reported, adding that Ocasio-Cortez's office denied being behind the effort.

Around 150 people lost their jobs as a result of the closure of the coffee shop.

However, Ocasio-Cortez has seen an explosion in popularity, thanks especially to Facebook and Twitter, neither of which existed when Lieberman ran for vice president in 2000.
