A Davis Police Department honor guard will remain with Corona's body until her burial.

Natalie Corona of the Davis Police Department was shot by one of the people involved in a three-car crash on January 10 in downtown Davis, blocks away from the University of California, Davis campus.

Davis Police confirmed early Friday morning that the shooter was found dead inside a home near the scene with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A female rookie police officer was shot dead Thursday night, the second killed in the last two days in the United States.

She graduated from the police academy this past July, and her proud father, Colusa County Supervisor Merced Corona, a retired sergeant with the Colusa County Sheriff's Office, pinned her badge to her uniform on August 2. She is the first Davis police officer killed in the line of duty since 1959, Pytel said. "Main lesson taught was to never lose sight of who you are and where you come from", she wrote. "I've known her for a couple of years. I anxious about her getting hurt and being out there in the streets".

Newsom says he and his wife, Jennifer, are saddened by the death of a woman he called "courageous" who died "protecting her protecting her community from harm".

Eby said the academy began with 70 cadets, which dwindled into the high 40s by the graduation time.

"We are extremely proud of Natalie and all her accomplishments at such a young age", Merced Corona told the newspaper at the time. "You see the accomplishment in what she'd done, graduating from the academy and pursuing what she wanted to do for the rest of her life". She was shot in the neck and then several other times as she lay on the ground. "And I've heard her described by our officers tonight as our daughter and our friend and our sister that we all wanted". "I was in denial".

"She couldn't wait to go to the academy, to get into the patrol vehicle by herself", remembered Espindola.

"From the day she left here, she was the example of what it takes to be successful", said Laird, who worked with Natalie at the academy.

"Its just really sad to hear that our little town, that something like this could happen".

Natalie Corona of the Davis Police Department was arriving at the scene of a three-car collision in downtown Davis when a man on a bicycle pulled up and opened fire on the officer, according to new details of the shooting released late Friday.

Written messages and flowers are streaming in to the police department.

He said his family's faith will get them through this. So I felt like I should do something. "It's sad, it's sad", said resident Pablo Marquez.

But despite the bad tragedy he is facing with his family over the loss, Merced Corona somehow remained positive.

"Unfortunately, we're no strangers to officers getting killed in the line of duty", Hampton said, referring to the fact that three Sacramento deputies have been shot to death on duty since 2014.

He acknowledged that the family would not be going through their grief alone.

"Today, as we deal with the pain and anger we are feeling about the awful loss of such a young, promising public servant, we should all focus on supporting Natalie's family, her colleagues, and our whole community, including Arbuckle, where Natalie grew up, said Assemblywoman Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, whose district includes southern Colusa County". "Most of these people are friends, and they just want to support us".
