Though, unlike in Virginia, where elected officials passed the state's incentive package fairly quickly, approval from NY is not expected until 2020.

The shares initially dipped when the Washington Post report was posted Friday but then quickly gained back some of the loss.

The Seattle-based company also said that it expects to generate "incremental tax revenue of more than $10 billion over the next 20 years as a result of Amazon's investment and job creation".

Michael Gianaris said the deal gives massive corporate welfare from scarce state dollars to one of the wealthiest corporations in the world. Whether it's building a pipeline of local jobs through workforce training or funding computer science classes for thousands of New York City students, we are working hard to demonstrate what kind of neighbor we will be.

United Food and Commercial Workers International Union President Marc Perrone said, "it is outrageous that Amazon is now essentially threatening New York City taxpayers to pay for its new headquarters or else it will leave town".

If Amazon does reconsider, it's unclear what their Plan B would be.

Sources who are "familiar with the company's thinking" spoke to The Washington Post on Friday, and said the e-commerce giant might reconsider its deal in the face of vocal opposition to the deal. "But not if that means that we're crushing unions, not if that means that we're terrorizing immigrants", Van Bramer said. "Yes, they can", Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) declared on Friday in response to the news, which was met with glee by advocacy groups that have opposed the NY government's deal with Amazon since it was unveiled in November. But the only South Side site to which the Amazon team returned for multiple site visits was the South Loop mega-site known as "the 78". Multiple parties reached out to Amazon to make sure that they know Chicago would still want them.

Detractors-including including US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who represents a nearby district in Queens and the Bronx-have pointed to the potential neighborhood disruption, strains on an already congested public transit system, and rising rent and property prices that could push out existing residents from nearby neighborhoods. Gianaris was recently nominated to a state board that has the power to veto the deal (though he has not yet been confirmed by staunch Amazon supporter Governor Cuomo).
