Gaga wins Grammy for ‘Shallow’; Hugh Jackman wins 1st Grammy

Drake won the Best Rap Song Award for "God's Plan" at the 61st Grammys Awards, and his acceptance speech came with a bit of controversy.

But we'll pause there, if only to save our breath for the latest award show drama - this time, concerning the Grammys.

But, if and when you hear her name tonight, in the context of nominees or as the victor, now you know a little more about who she is.

Brandi Carlile, who's already taken home three trophies, for best American roots performance and best American roots song for "The Joke", as well as best Americana album for By The Way, I Forgive You.

The 37-year-old musician is the most-nominated female artist at this year's awards, earning six nominations. Pop singer Ariana Grande recently tweeted that she pulled out of performing this year due to a creative disagreement with its producers, while rappers Childish Gambino (a.k.a. Donald Glover), Drake and Kendrick Lamar all reportedly turned down offers from the show, which has a fraught history with hip-hop artists. Gaga's initial 2 wins were out of 5 nominations, including for both Record and Song of the Year for "Shallow", which she performed with co-star Bradley Cooper.

Drake was also nominated in the Best Rap Song category as a co-writer on Travis Scott's hit "Sicko Mode".

Elder jazz statesman Wayne Shorter and his Quartet's Emanon won for best jazz instrumental album. That accolade is held by Pinetop Perkins, who won best traditional blues album in 2011, when he was 97.

The Soweto Gospel Choir, who've visited the Tiny Desk before, won best world music album for Freedom.

Cornell won for his haunting When Bad Does Good, beating a field that included the Arctic Monkeys and rising retro rockers Greta Van Fleet.

The night is, mostly, all about the performances.

There will also be a tribute to the late Aretha Franklin, who died last August.

What will the final speech from Neil Portnow - who caused more than a little consternation a year ago when he said women needed to "step up" in order to secure broader inclusion - contain?

This year's show exhibits some efforts to combat these diversity issues - the academy, which The Times reported has invited 900 new members to vote, expanded major categories from five to eight nominees.
