Another year, another Oscars. The stage is set, the stars are aligned, and Hollywood is ready for its biggest (and most infamous) night for the 97th time.
The 2025 Academy Awards are finally here, and with them comes the usual mix of red-carpet glitz, murmured politics, and the kind of industry self-congratulation that feels inevitable at this point. The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles once again plays host to an awards race that has been anything but predictable, with indie upstart Anora and the weighty, European Conclave locked in the final battle that has defied easy forecasting.

Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning street-level character study has racked up key guild wins, while Edward Berger’s Vatican-set drama has leaned on BAFTA momentum and a SAG Ensemble victory — two paths that suggest wildly different voting instincts within the Academy. And then there’s also dark horse contenders like Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, or James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, that could quietly upend the whole thing.

History is already being made, whether the Academy likes it or not. Emilia Pérez enters the night with a staggering 13 nominations — the most ever for a non-English language film — though its awards-season trajectory has been almost entirely derailed by off-screen controversies.
Demi Moore’s late-career reinvention in The Substance faces off against Mikey Madison’s breakout in Anora — a classic Oscar dilemma between rewarding longevity or anointing the future, with the added irony that Hollywood rarely respects either for long. Meanwhile, Adrien Brody and Timothée Chalamet face off for Best Actor, in what might be a poetic passing of the torch, or a reminder that Hollywood still loves a familiar face.

Presiding over the chaos is Conan O’Brien, the late-night veteran making his Oscars hosting debut. Whether his humour cuts through the evening’s usual bloat or gets swallowed by it remains to be seen.
Indian viewers can catch the event streaming live on Star Movies and JioHotstar, on Monday, March 3, at 5:30 AM IST.
