Srividya Angara Sinha, a Kuchipudi dancer and Shubha Nagarajan, an Odissi dancer, jointly founded the Citsabha Collective, a not-for-profit organization in February 2018 with the aim of promoting Indian traditional performing arts. They will be presenting the second edition of Svadhyaya Performing Arts Festival in Bengaluru on March 2.
Shubha started learning Odissi in 2006 and pursued it under training in Karnataka Kalashree Sharmila Mukerjee in Bengaluru. She has been performing the Kelucharan Mohapatra style of Odissi for 18 years now. She is an A-graded artiste with Doordarshan and is also empanelled with SPICMACAY.
She has toured the US with Kuchipudi artiste Srividya Angara as part of a collaboration called Samaagati.
The core belief of Citsabha, says Srividya, is to bring good art in terms of presentation, create awareness of classical art forms and perform across as many venues as possible. Citsabha, says Srividya, has different verticals that underscore the core belief of the collective .
The first of these is Roots, which Svadyaya is attached to. “The second is Reach Out, where we take classical dance and music to government schools and old age homes and Within, where we take classical art forms to residential complexes,” shares Srividya, over a call from her residence in Thanisandra. The duo, Srividya says, plans on making the coming editions of Svadhyaya different and bigger.

Describing herself and Shubha as two arms of the same genre, Srividya says, “When we come together, it creates something unique and harmonious, yet a distinct nature of each stream of our art form.”
“When we dance together in the same frame, you can see how the forms are so similar yet their flow is so distinct,” says Shuba from her residence in JP Nagar. “This is also one of the reasons for us to bring the jugalbandi this year between two musical forms — Hindustani and Carnatic.”
This edition of Svadhyaya will feature a jugalbandi between Kalpana Kishore (Carnatic, violin) with Anupama Bhagwat (sitar, Hindustani) with artistes such as BC Manjunath (mridangam) and Rahul Pophali (tabla).
The event is on March 2 at 7.30pm at Jagriti Theatre, Whitefield. Tickets on BookMyShow. For details visit citsabhacollective.in
